Churches and monasteries

Parish Church -- With a single nave, it is located next to a defense tower, which is used as a belfry. The first document related to the church goes back to 1497, when an oratory was dedicated to the Virgin Mary on that site. In 1511, a christening font was installed. In the second half of the XVI century, the growing independence achieved by the inhabitants of Deià, allowed them to have services, thus there was no longer need to go to Valldemossa. In 1584, Saint John the Baptist is established as the town's patron saint, and the temple is furnished with the proper devotional items. But in 1752, a fire destroys part of the building and most of these objects are lost. In the next decade, the church is rebuilt, as well as the clock and belfry. Finally, in 1958, the final restoration works are completed.

Open every day. Mass on Satudays and Sundays at 19’00 h.(October-March) and at 20’00 h.(April-September)

:::

Monastery of Miramar -- The monastery was founded in 1276 by the King Jaime II, upon the request of Ramón Llull. Its objective was to become a missionary school, dedicated to teaching Arabic and other oriental languages, in order to educate missionary monks. Llull spent three years in this school, writing several books and teaching. In 1872, the possessió was acquired by the Archduke Luís Salvador de Austria (1847-1915). Upon his death, the property of Miramar, as well as that of Son Marroig, are passed to his secretary, the Mallorquin Antoni Vives. Nowadays, the properties are still owned by the Vives family. Inside the monastery, there is a museum which tells its history.

Open Tuesday to Sunday. Price: adults: 3 €, children free.

:::

Possessió of Son Marroig -- Son Marroig, as well as Miramar, are two of the many properties acquired by the Archduke Luís Salvador de Austria (1847-1915) who, when he arrived to the island, fell in love with the landscapes of its north coast. The author of Die Balearen refurbished the old house, restored a fortified tower dating from the XVI century and added new constructions in an italian-like style. He also built on one end of the garden a small neoclassical temple in Carrara marble. It is a privileged mirador from where it is possible to see Sa Foradada and even the island of Sa Dragonera.
Upon the Archduke's passing, the property was passed to his secretary, the Mallorquin Antoni Vives. In 1928 the actual museum was installed. Since 1978 Son Marroig hosts the annual Internacional Festival of Deià, dedicated to chamber music.

Open Monday to Saturday. Price: 3 €.

Other places

Churchyard -- Located next to the church, on top of the hill and with impressive views over the valley which opens to the sea, the churchyard is the final resting place for many illustrious inhabitants of Deià. It is documented since the XVII century.

:::

Cove of Deià-- Situated between the capes of Deià and Son Beltran, this beautiful cove is the place to take a dip in the sea. It was first documented on the map of Cardenal Despuig (1785), and has long since served as a refuge for fishing boats. Until the XX century, the terraces surrounding the cove were used by the fishermen to cultivate vineyards and vegetables, as well as farming. Nowadays it has eight moorings, one bar and one restaurant, where one can enjoy a delicious meal next to the sea.

:::

Sa Foradada-- Sa Foradada was long ago a separate island, and as such is referred in many old maps of Mallorca, including that of Cardenal Despuig. A famous battle took place on this site in 1582, when one hundred and fifty corsairs from the north of Africa were defeated by only fifty locals under the command of Captain Mateu Sanglada. As a consequence of this and other attacks, a series of fortified watchtowers were built along the coast. One of them, the Tower of Sa Pedrissa, is located close to the town. The actual road that leads to Sa Foradada was also originally promoted by the Archduke Luís Salvador.

:::

Puig des Teix-- The peak (or Puig) of es Teix, with an elevation of 1.064 mt. is the highest point of the zone which forms the municipality of Deià. It is part of a mountain range which extends to Valldemossa with many sites of great beauty, such as Puig Caragolí, and many miradors.
